Watching Goodbye Mr. Chips

Peter O’Toole as Mr. Chips

On Thanksgiving eve we watched the musical movie, Goodbye Mr. Chips, a very, very old Mr. Chips, played by Peter O’Toole, has just visited with a new student and when he leaves, he questions if they had ever accomplished anything at their school and he says “I wonder if we were any use at all. I mean, what did we teach the boys; how to parse a sentence into ancient Greek? Is that going to help them today, was it? I suppose we did teach them one thing—How to behave to each other. Yes, we did try and teach them that. Is there anything more important than that? Is there? And the question I shall ask, only you can answer.

Then he sings the final verse of this wonderful song.

Fill The World With Love

In the morning of my life I shall look to the sunrise.
At a moment in my life when the world is new.
And the blessing I shall ask is that God will grant me,
To be brave and strong and true,
And to fill the world with love my whole life through.

(Chorus)
And to fill the world with love
And to fill the world with love
And to fill the world with love my whole life through

In the noontime of my life I shall look to the sunshine,
At a moment in my life when the sky is blue.
And the blessing I shall ask shall remain unchanging.
To be brave and strong and true,
And to fill the world with love my whole life through

(Chorus)

In the evening of my life I shall look to the sunset,
At a moment in my life when the night is due.
And the question I shall ask only I can answer.
Was I brave and strong and true?
Did I fill the world with love my whole life through?

A pretty good thing to ask yourself at these three stages at your life and just maybe if you work it right you can finally answer…”Yes, I did fill the world with love my whole life through.”
