It Ain’t Over

Leonard Hamilton
He figured the game was over.

Leonard Hamilton led Florida State University through an interesting battle with Michigan University all the way up to the final eleven seconds, was it? I guess then he started thinking about the $800,000 in bonus money he had accumulated. He figured the game was over. Well no, he said the game was over. He did not call for his team to foul and the amazed Michigan team just dribbled their way into history. Hey coach, what about “The game ain’t over till its over.” Yoggi Berra said that. Or “Never, never, never give up.” Winston Churchill saved Great Britain from the Germans with that one, or “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” That was Vince Lombardi’s quote. But in my eyes and many others, coach, you had quit on your team. Some watchers thought you might be thinking about point spreads and such. And how was the story handled? It turned into political correctness in your response to a post game reporter who was doing her job and asked you why you didn’t call for your team to foul. You’ve since apologized for your manner of handling that interview. Now what do you do about the team that you quit on?
