Haircut

Going in for a haircut this morning sure took me back a long ways. My barber was a lady from Thailand and as I sat watching her cut my hair my mind went back sixty nine years and I was in a barber shop in Kobe, Japan fresh out of combat in Korea. Somehow I’d slipped out of the hospital and the barber shop was close by. I remember that Japanese lady barber had shampooed my head and neck, cut my hair, she gave me a shave and then she had these little suction cups she used to suck the dirt out of the pores of the skin on my face. She cleaned my finger nails and trimmed them and then she massaged my neck and it was wonderful. It cost me a hundred yen. Barely over a quarter American. A G.I. Special. Sometimes I get the darnedest flashbacks.
