I was Thinking the other day about the difference in just doin’ your job and doing your job and then some. I was wondering if it could be said that the difference might mean just accepting your job and loving your job. Years ago I used to ask an audience, “How many of you love your job?” Then ask them to be honest and I’d ask, “How many of you hate your job?” Then I would suggest that possibly the reason you hate your job is because you just aren’t doing it. It must be a miserable existence to go to a job every day that you hate. When I had a wife and four children to support I was not raving mad about my job but I found satisfaction in performing my job at the best level I was capable of doing. I found my satisfaction outside my job by becoming a writer and a professional speaker. I approached those things with real passion and eventually found ways to apply them to a different job I was promoted to and my efforts led to a wonderful career. Did you ever shop at a farmer’s market? Some smart farmers weight out your purchase and then they might often toss in your bag something else as a free sample. A squash maybe. Call it his “and then some.” And just maybe next time you visit him you might comment on that squash and order more. This just might be a better, happier world if more of us would add some “and then somes” to our lives.
