Stand Up and Talk

MicrophoneWhen I was in high school I spent more time after school than anyone in our class. I was the self appointed class clown. My mouth was always getting me into trouble and I was forever being told to “Sit down and shut up.” It took me twenty-five years at the railroad to get into a serious management role and I found the meetings I was required to attend really boring and so I reverted to my role of class clown again and I was frequently being told to sit down and shut up. Just recently I took a class on Stand Up Comedy. I asked our instructor, “What do I do?” and he said, “Just stand up and talk.”  Then I went over to a comedy club and signed up for an “open mike” spot. When my time came I stood up and talked. About thirty seconds later the people in the audience started shouting out to me, “Sit down and shut up!” I figure I haven’t come very far in the past sixty-five years.

Actually the part about taking a class to become a Stand-Up Comic is true and I made my debut the other night and the audience applauded.  I did fifteen minutes without a single note and remembered almost all of my lines and the laughter sounded like music to my ears. Now If I can start learning Stand-Up at eighty just what might you do?

Say Something Good

“Make a U-Turn at your first opportunity.” I hear that a lot since I started using my GPS and I think it is pretty good advice. I plan to do it on my own without that advice from now on though because I have begun to realize that when I get out on an interstate highway and go hell bent for election I am driving right past some of the most interesting spots in America. I’ll be checking out the music at the Carrboro Music Festival and they have a hundred different music groups performing.  Can you even Imagine going anywhere and having the choice of a hundred different bands to listen to in just one day? What’ll you have? Jazz, country, folk, big band, rock and roll, heavy metal…I just bet you can find it.  May God bless Carrboro with sunshine and bless all America. Please God keep our troops from harms way.

Points To Ponder

What you possess in the world will be found at the day of your death to belong to someone else. But what you are will be yours forever. Henry Van Dyke

A Little Humor

Quote of the Week

Circumstances may cause interruptions and delays, but never lose sight of your goal. Prepare yourself in every way you can by increasing your knowledge and adding to your experience, so that you can make the most of opportunity when it occurs. Mario Andretti
