Thinking in Decades

Art Fettig with wife, Jean – I’m not done yet…

Something happened as I was approaching my ninetieth birthday.  I began to look back upon my life as nine decades old so far.  The first thought I had was that ten years ago on my birthday I decided to take a comedy classes and that lead to my adventures as Almost Andy.  And the joy I have found in that role. Oh the parades, the presentations, the program that we captured as a DVD. The wonderful fun at Mount Airy, appearing in The Andy Griffith Playhouse, Being mistaken as Andy by soon to be Governor McCreary making front page news all over North Carolina.  That play at Benson, N.C. Every show was sold out two times.  Then Barney, Scott Epperson  died and we cancelled the shows for that third year.  My busy third decade, the war in Korea, coming home and getting married, having children.  I bet you get the idea.  The fourth decade, moving to Battle Creek, joining A.A. buying a used Underwood typewriter a ream of paper and having a business card printed announcing to the whole world that henceforth I would be known as Art Fettig, Freelance Writer.

I’m still getting this Decade concept sorted our in my mind but it is fun remembering the good and the bad of every decade and then starting out on my tenth decade and looking forward to seeing some new  places, meeting some new friends and writing new stories, more newsletters and finding new places to use my speaking talents. It would be so nice to find someone to write some songs with too.

I’m not done yet, in this tenth decade I hope to get closer to my Lord.

  1. Art over 44 years ago you changed my life – thanks for taking the time – you have been with me throughout my career! I think of you more than you would ever know! Thanks again for being you!

    Happy Birthday!!!

  2. As I said yesterday, Art, your writing and humor, like good wine, seem to get better and better with age.

I’m guessing about the wine, of course (never been able to afford “good” wine), but I’m surely not guessing about you. You’re the genuine article — as is Jean, by the way — and the two of you have enriched my life.

    Happy birthday, my friend!
