The Christophers

Dove Peace

In 1956 I graduated from The Christopher’s Leadership Course. It was a 6 week course in Public Speaking and our instructor, named Frank, was a Dale Carnegie instructor days but he was a volunteer in teaching this course. His partner was a Catholic priest, Father Bresnahan. The motto of the Christophers was “Better to light just one little candle than to curse the darkness.” Their prayer began…”Oh Lord make me an instrument of Thy peace.” One day I was inspired to redo the melody of that prayer in a hymn I heard. The hymn disturbed me. The words didn’t seem to fit the melody. I worked on the re-write several days.  I took what I came up with to Greg Brayton’s Recording Studio and just three hours later I was driving my Explorer down I-69 headed home playing our version of that life changing prayer. I’ve known some folks who listen to the prayer and then pick out a lifetime goal for their lives.  For instance I worked on “Where there is hatred let me sow love.”  A leader of Christophers for a while selected “Where there is sorrow, joy.”

Please don’t run away from this. Forget about religion for just a moment while you listen to this song.  It is pretty obvious that with all that has happened to our nation this world is going to require that all of us pitch in on the job of restoration that will be required.  Listen to the song and see if possibly you might get an idea of what you might do to help others. For instance, one line is “Where there is despair, hope”  Listen to this song several times…maybe daily and see if one of those powerful lines doesn’t reach out to you and encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and reach out to another person with some words of comfort to bring a bit of peace into their lives. Just try it. Please?  Just pull up the song below.  Thanks
